Kelaghagh Dam, Simdega

Kelaghagh Dam is probably the easiest place in Simdega to combine water, hills, greenery and adventure in one outing. Built across the Chhinda River, the reservoir sits among several hills, giving the water a naturally enclosed and scenic setting. What makes it especially useful for KHOOJ is that you do not have to travel deep into the countryside to experience it. The dam is only about 4 km from Simdega district headquarters, so it works equally well for a relaxed family outing or a quick evening escape. The experience here has also become more active in recent years. There is a small park on a plateau overlooking the reservoir, where you can walk around, sit with family, enjoy the views or have a picnic. And if you want something more exciting, motor boating is currently available, with a January 2026 report putting the fare at ₹100 per person. The district administration also identifies parasailing as an attraction at the dam, although KHOOJ should show it as subject to operation/weather rather than assuming it runs every day. The nicest way to experience Kelaghagh is to come in the afternoon, spend some time around the park and reservoir, take the boat ride if operating, and stay for the changing light over the hills. During monsoon the surrounding landscape becomes intensely green, while October to March offers the most comfortable weather for spending time outdoors.
